Brigadeiros

The History Behind The Brigadeiro Sweet! The brigadeiro is a typical and very famous Brazilian sweet, made from condensed milk, powdered chocolate and butter and wrapped in soft granulated chocolate. It became popular in the 1940s, when rationing made condensed milk a common substitute for desserts and the company Nestlé started selling condensed milk and powdered chocolate in Brazil. Confectioner Heloísa Nabuco de Oliveira, who supported the candidacy of the handsome brigadier Eduardo Gomes for his presidential campaign, created this recipe. Due to his good looks and the fact that he was an unmarried eligible bachelor, a group of women decided to sell the delicacy at rallies to raise funds for him. This was the first national election in which all women were able to vote. Although he lost the election the sweet was named “Brigaderio” in his honour and is still very popular at birthday parties and weddings.
